.....thank Brian Mulroney and Bill Davis for driving that particular model onto the rocks...should welcome it for long term Liberal governments until you
depart the earth, Ernie...."moderate Canadians" and their Tilley hats deserve them....

....and I don't mind Iggy in a lot of ways....I just wonder why he felt so compelled to spend virtually all of his life outside the country that he now
wants to lead....living in a country that you want to lead for most of your life doesn't seem a bad thing to me....
...and, if the Liberals think that Iggy is being mistreated, wait until the next election inQuebec when the BQ launches its advertising war.... |

Platform ernie, did involve paying you in paper bags full of money at a hotel or did you want it in a hockey duffle bag signed by the Maple Leafs instead?

The personal negative ads were very effective against Dion so I understand why the same type is being tried again. It sounds like Harper wants an election but
at the same time he claims that he wants to make Parliament work - maybe he CAN have it both ways?
Personally, I'd like to see rules established to make these types of ads part of election spending and with limits on when they can begin but the media probably want every dollar they can get so they won't say anything. |

The attack ads so far are very effective and raise some honest questions. If someone leaves the country for 34 years, that person has abandoned the place. Live
somewhere else for 34 years and that is your nation, just like Iggy said - see the attack ad. The USA is his country.

....I guess in my world that might be true but the upper-middle class in this country probably sees the long absence as a bonus.....Allan Greig was saying
tonight on CBC that it wouldn't be a problem to his circle....whatever that is...

.....I don't question Ignatieff's claim of Canadianness or even his election as MP or a cabinet minister but as prime minister, it leaves me a little
baffled.......maybe its all post-modernism coming to electoral politics......when I'm in a grumpy mood, I sometimes think that the late Gordon
Sinclair's definition of a Canadian still has some value......

Sinclair was very charming for an anachronistic ignoramus.
Here's what Gandhi had to say to Sinclair: "my son, these things are too deep for you. Why dont you run along and play golf and drink beer?" I mean, testing Gandhi's patience, that's a pretty neat trick. |

You mean Pierre Berton, Elvid?
He said, "A true Canadian is one who can make love in a canoe without tipping". |

Trudeau was an avid canoeist and known as a poor tipper, no idea of his love making reviews though.

...I think Sinclair's comment was that the two tests of Canadian were you either were born here or died here and lots happened in between......wouldn't
pass the test these days.....

Good point. Even the Arrow was put together by "our" Scottish Strathclyde grads.

Didn't Gordon Sinclair ask if the Arrow was affected by the menstrual cycle of the secretary pool?

Elvid Presliad |

....well, the secretarial pool probably would have a lot to say about the failure of the Avro....the level of partying from Crawford Gordon on down didn't
help matters much.....
.....back to Sinclair, I reread his autobiography this winter.....quite fascinating account about growing up in Danforth/Riverdale area when it was first being developed.....his meeting with Hitler was pretty interesting too....and his decision to become an atheist after witnessing too much poverty in India....and some interesting some tidbits about Toronto Star in the Hindmarsh era..... |

....anyway, back to the topic at hand, Iggy came out with all guns blazing today claiming that the Conservative ads are an attack on immigrants which misses
the point....Warren the K. has to bring in Wayne Gretzky.....even though Gretzky isn't running for Prime Minister and had already lived twice as long as
Iggy had in Canada by the time that he was traded to LA in 1988....

ith so much going on in the woprld, I find it more than a little pathetic that all the Conservatives can come up with are personal attacks (so high
school)...so to paraphrase, Canadians who go abroad to maximize their potential are losers, wherease those who stay here and attend a second rate university in
Alberta are winners...sheesh. I weep for what Harper has turned the Progressive Conservative party into...by the Bye wasn't our first P.M. an immigrant?

.....Ernie, you're obscuring the issue.....why should I should elect anyone to the highest office in this country who left Canada at 22 and, for all
intents and purposes, didn't return for almost 40 years.....who, despite his gifts as an academic and public intellectual, absented himself from the
crucial issues of his generation in this country.....the two Quebec referendums, Meech Lake, the repatriation of the Canadian constitution et al...
....did Ignatieff maximize his potential at BBC show host and regular at Grouchos during those years between 1985 and 1995 when he should been fighting against the separtists and Meech Lake... ...by the way, Sir John A. came here at five and stayed for the next 71 years... ....Iggy came here at 12 and left at 22....and didn't come back for 34 years except for two years at UBC... |
