Bhaduria firing justified, high court says
OTTAWA (CP) -- Independent MP Jag Bhaduria was justifiably fired as a high
school teacher for suggesting school board members should be lined up and
shot, the Supreme Court of Canada says.
The unanimous judgment, delivered Thursday, capped a seven-year dispute in
which Bhaduria had tried to overturn his 1990 dismissal.
Justice Peter Cory, writing for the court, quashed a decision by a labor
arbitration panel that excused Bhaduria's misconduct as a temporary
aberration that was unlikely to be repeated.
"There was no evidence that would suggest that his feelings of bitterness
and resentment had dissipated," wrote Cory.
Bhaduria, who was forced out of the Liberal parliamentary caucus three
years ago over a false campaign biography, accepted the verdict stoically.
"It's a disappointment, but life goes on," he said.
