JB Kelly -- a personal loss Had one of those, my history prof. who retired and moved to the country near my folks place. Never turned down a chance to go anywhere and give incredibly motivating talks to high school kids, heritage groups etc. I would occasionally drive him to these things. Great loss when he went. 92 I think. |

...wrong photo, adma:
...this guy was a fixture on Detroit TV. I never saw his schtick in real time(since I wasn't around in the '50s), but I sure saw a lot of re-runs on Channel 50 - WKBD. Always thought White Fang was "the bomb!".
Soupy used to put a big fat smile on my face. R.I.P. Soupy Sales.

His son Hunt painted my brother's house in between Bowie's Tin Machine sputterings.
That's the extent of my linkage to greatness, think I could stretch that into a book?

...think Bowie might sue you for even mentioning Tin Machine, let alone writing a book about it.

He should have thought about me writing a book then, his Tin Machine scam needs to be exposed.

No singer today is a tenth, even a hundredth as cool. Fuck, most musicians aren't fit to sweep his cool dust off the stage. I was not at all a Bowie fan growing up (he was that old Ziggy guy). Took me years to realize he was probably THE most important and influential artist of the past several decades. Brilliant. Absolutely fucking brilliant. I hope he has another album in him. The last three were awesome. I wish he'd have left his lovely, dancing, snaggly teeth alone, though. I thought he was more attractive without a mouth full of bathroom tiles. Then again, I should talk. I got mine capped for TV years ago. Have regretted it ever since. |

...DP is somewhat limited in his Bowie fandom. I really only appreciate the period from "Low", "Heroes", "Lodger" and "Scary Monsters". If you look at the Line-ups on those albums, you'll understand why(Fripp, Eno, Belew, Alomar...all "proggies"). Earlier stuff, I like only "Aladdin Sane"(Mike Garson on piano!). I'd say he was a great organizer of musicians. I'd been in the same room with him once for about 5 minutes, but never said a word to him. I felt "cold" around the guy...and not "cool" at all. Can't really comment, really. Women seem to really dig him for "coolness", though(so I guess that's all that counts, really). Have I ever told you about my run-in with Kid Rock when he was simply know as
"Bob" in the underground Detroit music biz?
DP: "What's your real name? "Kid" or "Rock"?
