Toronto-born journalist John Roberts, once considered a likely successor to chief anchor Dan Rather on the CBS Evening News, has jumped networks to CNN.
Roberts, 49, has been with CBS for more than a decade. He served as the network's chief White House correspondent for six years, hosted the Sunday edition of the CBS Evening News for more than 10 years and was anchor of several CBS morning shows.
"Leaving CBS News will be difficultno question," Roberts wrote in an e-mail to CBS colleagues, which was also posted on the network's blog Public Eye.
"The ache of anxious anticipation has been gnawing away at me for some time now. It's not just the thought of leaving behind the comfort of familiar surroundings. It's about the many colleagues around the world whom I have come to call friends."
Roberts, whose Canadian credits include stints at CTV's Canada AM and at Citytv in Toronto, had been widely considered the top internal candidate to replace Rather, who stepped down in March 2005. However, CBS officials have kept Bob Schieffer in the anchor chair as interim host of the network's nightly newscast.
CNN president Jon Klein announced Wednesday that Roberts will start on Feb. 20.
Though he will remain based in Washington reporting as a senior national correspondent for CNN, Roberts will not report from the White House, Klein said.
During his time at CBS, Roberts covered significant stories such as the Oklahoma City bombing and, most recently, the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
