- Yes, friends, the past 24 hours have seen another excellent day for all Canadians including, of course, that tousle-headed, dreamy eyed youngster with the education in drama who has a solid chance to prove that Canada includes even more low information and high entitlement voters than the United States does by electing Just-In as PM in 2015.
- In the past 24 hours, PM Harper has finalized yet another free trade agreement, for the first time with an Asian economic powerhouse in South Korea. While not as potentially huge in its benefits to Canadian exporters and consumers as last fall's free trade agreement with the 29 members of the European Union, this latest agreement gets us much more access to a growing dynamic economy and as our first trade agreement ever with an Asian country establishes a template for us in negotiating future trade deals with other Asian Tigers.
- 166 years ago today, the then Canada of Upper Canada or Ontario and Lower Canada or Quebec became for the first time ever responsible democracies when British Governor General of Canada Lord Elgin swore in Baldwin in Upper Canada and Lafontaine in Lower Canada as premiers after they had successfully campaigned on platforms requiring that henceforth the executive branch of government would be responsible to the elected representatives (the legislative branch) of the people. Previously, the elected representatives could jabber away for days at a time but could not hold the executive branch accountable and the executive branch could choose to determine by itself which laws to propose, enact and enforce (sort of like what Obama is doing down south these days with various aspects of Obamacare). While we did not achieve a perfect democracy on this day in 1848 (e.g. women couldn't vote until about 70 years later, Indians until 112 years later, Britain and the GG could still over rule and impose their wills although they rarely did) we did take the first giant fundamental step to a system of responsible, democratic government on this day and it deserves to be celebrated rather than forgotten.
- Oh, and Just-In, why he had himself a new rinse, blow dry, trim and styling at the trendy new hair salon near parliament hill that is the in place for the political class to get suitably coiffured. That Truedope, he knows what's really important to the Canadian people or at least to the low information and high entitlement classes.
